Why does skin need a different routine in autumn and winter?

Because the conditions change, and skin's needs change with them. Cold air, wind and indoor heating draw moisture out of the skin and weaken the outer barrier — so skin that felt settled in summer can turn tight, dull, flaky, or unexpectedly reactive.

At the same time, something useful happens. With the strong sun gone, autumn and winter become the safest window of the year to renew rather than only protect. We call it the regeneration season, and the routine shifts accordingly: gentle exfoliation, deeper hydration, and our strongest night treatments.

How do I know when it's time to switch to a winter routine?

Your skin usually tells you before the calendar does — the switch belongs to the first sustained cold spell, not to a date.

The signals to watch for:

  • Your cream absorbs and disappears faster than it used to
  • Tightness after cleansing that doesn't settle
  • Makeup starting to cling to dry patches
  • New redness around the nose and cheeks
  • A dullness that doesn't lift

If you've been using the same products year-round, this is usually the moment they stop feeling like enough.

What does a DOS autumn | winter routine look like?

Three products, not seven. We build around a cleanser, a daytime step, and a night treatment doing the real work — because a routine you actually complete every evening beats one you abandon in January.

In the colder months the night step carries the routine. That's when skin repairs, and when actives can work without sun exposure competing against them. Which night treatment is right depends on what your skin is doing this season — renewal, brightening, hydration or calming — which is exactly what the skin test is for.

We don't sell you a shelf. We find the need first, then recommend.

Why are exfoliating acids and retinol recommended in autumn and winter?

Because sun exposure is lower, and skin tolerates renewal far better when it isn't also defending itself.

Summer leaves behind dead surface cells, uneven texture and pigment. Autumn is when that can finally be worked on. Mandelic acid is our starting point for most people — it has a larger molecule than other AHAs, so it works more slowly and more gently, which makes it suitable even for reactive and blemish-prone skin.

Begin with two or three nights a week and build from there. Every formula is made in our own lab, clinically tested for safety, and completely alcohol-free. Daily sun protection still applies through winter.

Is winter skincare only for dry skin? My skin is oily, sensitive, or breakout-prone.

No — and winter is the season those skin types are most often handled badly.

Oily skin can be dehydrated at the same time. Stripping it in cold weather usually makes the oil worse, not better; the barrier compensates by producing more. Reactive, barrier-compromised skin needs support and repair, not heavier occlusion sitting on top of it.

This is the exact combination our founder Chrysanthi lives with — oily, reactive, with a thin outer barrier and clogged pores. Finding nothing on the market that respected all of it at once is the reason DOS exists. The autumn | winter range includes formulations for oily and blemish-prone skin, for sensitivity, and for barrier repair.

Can a winter routine help with the dark spots left from summer?

Autumn and winter are the right season to work on pigmentation — and the only season to start it properly.

Sun-triggered pigment often surfaces weeks after the exposure that caused it, which is why spots look worse in September than they did in July. Lower UV levels mean brightening and renewal actives can do their work without new pigment forming behind them.

We'll be honest about the timeline: pigmentation is the slowest concern to shift. Expect visible fading over weeks of consistent use, not days — and daily sun protection is not optional, because without it the spots return.

How quickly will I see a difference?

Most people see a visible change within 7 to 10 days — softer texture, better hydration, less reactivity, more light in the skin.

Deeper concerns work on a longer clock. Pigmentation and fine lines need months of consistency, and we'd rather say that than promise otherwise.

Everything is made in small batches in our own lab, by a daughter-and-father team, and every ingredient is published in full on the product page. Our customers rate us 4.9 out of 5, and around 28% come back.
